Purpose of this site

This site was created to be the home of Art Mellor on the Internet. It serves 2 main purposes: a place to practice the (albeit geeky) hobby of system administration and as home for the infamous Gross List (and its buddies). These lists used to be hosted by Midnight Networks but an impending acquisition, the CDA and some amount of maturity caused the Gross List to be put on hold for about year. Now, the CDA overturned and Art no longer employed by Midnight Networks, the Gross List (and friends) has been resurrected at scumpa.com.

Why scumpa?

When I set up a domain for home use I chose the name scumpa.com. Scumpa is a Romanian word meaning dear. It is pronounced "scoom-pah". When I was at Midnight Networks I sat next to a Romanian woman who would occasionally refer to her husband as scumpa while talking to him on the phone. As was the way, we mercilessly taunted her over this and began calling everyone at work scumpa. It even became our morning greeting - "Heya, scumpa!". This went on for months and eventually the word grew on me so when I went to choose a domain name, that's what I picked. So it's sort of an in joke, but I like it.

This is Cristina and her scumpa* (Andrei).

* "Scumpa" is the feminine form, so not appropriate for a husband, but she did it as a joke and it stuck.
